Cast copper alloy mount in the form of an eagle displayed, with head turned to the left and wings outspread. There are two rivet holes at the base of the mount, between the tail and the two claws of the eagle, that are 3 mm in diameter, but the rivets are no longer extant. The body and upper half of the wings are decorated with raised moulded squares and the lower half of the wings have raised ridges to appear like feathers. There is no decoration on the back of the mount, which is flat, and no sign of any other attachment points. The mount was likely used as an armorial badge as the eagle as a motif is so often used in this context. It is certainly too thick to have been used as a pendant.
See record SUR-F33C0A for a similar mount in the form of an eagle, which is dated from the late Medieval period to the early Post-Medieval period.
See record SF-077973 for an armorial badge in the form of an eagle with similar openwork which is dated from the Medieval period.
Read (2001) illustrates a pendant with an eagle displayed and openwork, but the decoration is much more simple, on page 57, fig.36, no.458, which is dated from the later Medieval period.
