Object type certainty: Certain

Lead conical weight with a pointed apex and circular base dating from the late medieval to post-medieval period 1400 to 1600AD. The weight has a centrally drilled longitudinal aperture. The base has a cavity within it that is almost circular in plan. The base has a cavity within it that is almost circular in plan. The length is 32mm, the width is 25mm and the weight 72.63g.
The form can be associated with medieval fishing line weights, as reported from London (e.g. Steane and Foreman 1988, in Aston, M. (ed.), Medieval Fish, Fisheries and Fishponds in England, BAR 182, Oxford, pages 137-186).
Similar weights are also illustrated in Egan, G., 1998 The Medieval Household: Daily Living c.1150-c.1450 (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London) London : The Stationery Office, 322, no.1038, and are dated 15th to 16th century AD.
Weights can be hard to date due to being a functional item that has not altered significantly over time. Biggs and Withers (2000) note that standing weights made of lead were still used in comparatively recent times.
