Iron Age (200 BC to AD 100) toggle: The copper alloy toggle has a swollen central section with an oval perforation. The interior walls of the perforation are concave, and the perforation is off-centre leaving one wall to be thinner than the other. This may be due to wear and use rather than cast. Integral to either end is an extended arm which is circular in section and terminates with a bulbous knop. The arms are slightly waisted (narrowed).
The surface of the toggle has a well-developed shiny mid green patina which incomplete.
The toggle measures 33.1mm long, 12.57mm wide, 8.3mm thick and weighs 6.01g.
Similar examples are recorded on this database including HESH-EDB833, GLO-E0E5F3 and BH-417200 which all have decorative grooves separating the sections whereas as SOM-484F4F does not. The toggle dates to c. 200 BC to AD 100.
