An incomplete cast lead-alloy whistle of late Post-Medieval date, circa AD 1750 -1900. The whistle is in the form of a pipe bowl which is sub-conical with a hollow interior and a short circular projecting stem. The opening of the bowl is broken and worn, as is the stem. The surface of the bowl is decorated with irregularly spaced raised pellets and a faint casting line is present on the longitudinal axis.
The metal has a mid-brown Patina and is worn. The whistle is 32.5mm long, 25.6mm wide, 1.6mm thick and weighs 11.7g.

SWYOR-1BA6D0 states that "until recently, these pipes were thought to be for smoking, but an article by David Higgins in The Society for Clay Pipe Research, number 76 (Autumn / Winter 2009) has identified complete curated examples which have a lid, and which were used as whistles. They were probably children's toys and may have been made in Germany".
