An incomplete and heavily corroded iron rotary key dating to the Medieval period, c. 1270-1400. The exact form of the bow is uncertain, though the shank is rectangular in section and narrows above the projecting bit, the upper section of which is circular-sectioned and tapers to a rounded tip. The bit itself is heavily damaged and corroded, though its form probably consisted originally of three separate clefted bars. Preserved in poor condition, it survives to a length of c. 137mm, 8.63mm thick at the midpoint of the shank, and a maximum of 28.55mm thick between the shank and surviving bit. It weighs 78.57g.
For a broad parallel, see record ID BERK-841F58 on the PAS database, as well as examples published in Egan and Pritchard (1991) p. 188.
