A fragment (consisting of roughly one half) of the upper stone of a Roman stone rotary hand mill or quern c AD 43 - 410. The quern appears to be formed from Old Red Sandstone, which would fit with the local geology of the findspot. The edge along the break reveals the presence of pebbles of other minerals within the rock which will wear at different rates. It measures 350.00 mm in diameter and is c145.00 mm at its widest point. The quern is slightly convex on the upper face; at its outside edge it is 86 mm thick, thinning to c 55 mm at the centre. The lower surface is flat. The surface throughout is uniform, with a slight roughness and pitting that would have facilitated grinding.
