An incomplete and squashed post-Medieval silver closed thimble (c. 1600-c. 1700). Treasure case no. 2017 T567.

The thimble was found together in three pieces.

The walls have eight interlocking chevrons defined by plain bands and each chevron is filled with 'waffle work'. There are three plain circumferential plain bands, one above and two below. The centre of the crown is cross-hatched and surrounded by a circumferential plain band. There is 'waffle work' below this band. A vertical break has occured along a soldered joining seam. The crown also appears to have been soldered to the walls.

Thimbles with similar decoration have been recorded as Treasure on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database: SOM-F97398 (2016T832) and WILT-D47DF7 (2012T731).

20.6mm (height); 22.8mm (width); 9.0mm (thickness). Overall weight: 7.01g.

Notes:

The find contains a minimum of 10% silver and predates 1717. It thus qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of precious metal content and age.
