A fragment from the base of a Roman ceramic vessel dating to c AD 240-350. The fragment is part of a pedestal base for a broad based vessel. The fabric is a fine, slightly sandy clay, fully oxidised resulting in an orangey-red colour, characteristic of Oxford Colour Coated Ware. Areas of the red slip applied to the surface to give the impression of Samian ware remain on the inside surface of the base and the outer surface. The Oxford region was producing this type of pottery between c. AD 240-350.
