A copper alloy trumpet brooch from the Roman period, dating to c.1st to 2nd centuries AD. The trumpet brooch has a typical oval head shape and is a sprung example. The head is decorated with a groove around the edge. At the back of the head is a lug which is pierced and holds the spring in place. The spring five coils and curves around to form a wire head loop, clasped together below the loop with a rectangular strip of copper alloy. The rectangular strip has three ridges and the central ridge is decorated with a series of diagonal grooves.
The bow arches out from the head and tapers towards the incomplete foot. The bow is oval in cross-section and is decorated with an oval petalled waist moulding (acanthus button). Above and below the waist moulding is a transverse ridge. A vertical groove runs the length of each side of the leg below the waste moulding.
At the rear of the brooch the catchplate is incomplete. Only a fragment of the pin remains extending downwards from the spring. The object as a mid-green patina in good condition.
