An incomplete lead or lead alloy unifaced token of the Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1400 to c. AD 1800.
The token is broadly circular in plan and rectangular in section. The obverse design appears to be of letters joined together to form a makers or merchant's mark, the letters appear to read T F P with an E above on it's back. (Powell type: 2). The reverse appears to be undecorated. The token has a small broadly triangular hole through the centre.
The token measures 19.4 mm in diameter and is 2.8 mm thick. It weighs 5.5 g.
The token is a mid grey in colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Lead tokens are a frequently occurring find, with a variety of different designs. Tokens like this, were used as tallies or as replacement low denomination coinage during the Medieval and Post Medieval periods. Other examples of unifaced tokens can be found on the database, including WMID-AE5945 and WMID-E34905.
