An uninscribed silver unit struck for the East Anglian Iceni, dating c. 40-20 BC. Variant of Rudd's 'Punk Head' type, c.f ABC no. 1525. Obverse: Male head right with braided hair, large oval eye, pellet-in-beaded ring motifs in front. Reverse: horse walking right, pellet-in-ring and pellet-in-beaded ring motifs above and in front, corn-ear between legs.
Rudd comments in reference to this coin's most common form: 'The basic type encompasses a number of extremely rare variants, often difficult to distinguish because of the worn state in which these coins usually occur. These include a bearded head on the obverse, apparently breathing fire, and the replacement of the phallic symbol beneath the horse with a corn-ear motif.' (Rudd 2015, p. 83). This coin is the first of its type to be recorded on the PAS database.
