An incomplete cast silver pin. The head of the pin is globular in shape with a collar at the base of the head. A short length of the shaft is still apparent, measuring 6.78mm in length. The head of the pin is decorated with a series of spiralled ribs curving from the base and meeting at the top of the head, often referred to as 'wrythen' decoration. The head of the pin shows evidence of gilding, while the shaft of the pin is matte silver in colour with dark grey patches showing signs of tarnishing.

Notes:

This pin belongs to Ross's Type LXX, with globular or ball-shaped heads and a collar at the junction between pinhead and shaft (Ross 1991, pp. 295-305). They have been dated to the eighth or ninth centuries. 'Wrythen' decoration is quite common on these types of pin and a number of examples survive (Ross 1991, p. 120 with references) including many on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database: see LIN-D22765, LIN-F5DB99, SOM-12CF71 and PUBLIC-DFDF30 for example.

Conclusion:

This object constitutes a prima facie case of treasure by consisting of more than 10% precious metal and is of an antiquity greater than 300 years.
