DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)

Unique ID: LANCUM-A79DB1

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Very possibly a middle Saxon or Carolingian copper alloy double-hooked dress fastener dateing from the 8th-early 9th century.. The hooks are conjoined by an integral sub-rectangular sectioned bar that is pierced by a neat, probably drilled, transverse hole, and is decorated with multiple transverse grooves, now rather faint through abrasion.

Sometimes identified as shroud hooks, such objects might also have been used as harbicks (havettes or shear-board hooks, implements to fix cloth during the sharing of the nap). See discussion in Hinton Hamwic 1996, 47-8. Examples from Norfolk include those from Cantley (Norfolk Historic Environment Record number 51311), Norwich (Norwich Households no. 79) and Roudham (PAS SF-E1B756). This example may be classified as Read 2008 early medieval Class M.
