A base sherd of an incomplete ceramic Crockerton ware vessel dating to the 17th or 18th century. The surviving section consists of half of the base. The fabric has a powdery feel and is decorated with a slip and glaze internally.

The base is decorated with a floral motif consisting of four leaves , in between each leaf is projection terminating with a probable flower.

Notes:

The vessel was recovered as part of a significant waster group from Crockerton including slipware and a chamberpot. The assemblage contains firing faults.
Lorrain Mepham comments:
The fact that there are large chunks and some complete/nearly complete vessels suggests that at least some of it (if not all) is primary waste rather than a secondary deposit.
Given that as yet there are only two known kilns at Crockerton, and those are both late C15/C16, this group is clearly of interest in expanding the range of forms chronologically. This is the first known slipware group from Crockerton. Crockerton ware was clearly a flourishing industry from at least the 12th century through to the 1840s.
