COIN

Unique ID: BERK-7EEE17

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A worn and clipped copper alloy Roman nummus (AE3) from the House of Valentinian, dating to the period AD 364-375 (Reece period 19), SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE reverse type. Uncertain mint. Interestingly, this coin has been clipped to honour the outline profile of the bust of the emperor. The reason for this is unknown and there is no evidence of any mounts or attachments on the reverse to convert it into a brooch or other decorative object. This cutting out of the bust has been noted on other coins, including another of this same issue (see BERK-474AB2). See CAM-EC24C6 for a denarius of Julia Mamaea which has been cut in a similar manner, and SOMDOR-DC6398 for a piece of Postumus or Victorinus.
