An incomplete post-medieval silver base penny of Edward VI, dating to the period AD 1547-1549. It is from the third period, showing the Tudor Rose on the obverse and the reverse depicts a long cross fourchee over a royal shield. North 1945, London mint. (North, JJ, 1980, English Hammered Coinage Volume II, Spink & Son, London, p124, no.1945.)

There are two holes in the coin, on the obverse one is almost in the centre of the rose (measuring 1.68mm diameter), whilst the other is considerably smaller in diameter (measuring 0.69mm in diameter), and is at about 4 o clock.

Pierced post-medieval silver coins are fairly common finds which are known from hoards, they thus do not appear to have been removed from circulation and continued to function as a coin. It was therefore not submitted for consideration as Treasure as it does not fit the definition given in the Treasure Act 1996.
