A fragment of a post-Medieval silver-gilt dress-hook (1500-1600). Treasure case no. 2017 T546.

The plate and attachment loop are missing.

This fragment is the hook of a Read Class D, Type 1 early post-Medieval sharp hooked clasp (Read 2008: 58-61). The hook, curving rearward, is 'D'-shaped in cross-section and has a sharp point. A feature integral with the hook is in the shape of a fleur-de-lis. This feature is moulded at the front and rear.

The object is brown with patches of gilding.

17.0mm (length); 7.6mm (width); 1.7mm (thickness); 4.5mm (thickness including hook). Weight: 0.82g.

The find contains a minimum of 10% silver and predates 1717. It thus qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of precious metal content and age.
