A post medieval copper alloy double loop oval buckle or sword belt hanger dating to c AD 1500-1630. This is a specialised type of spectacle buckle which was used to suspend a sword belt via a separate hooked fastener on the end of the strap. The sword belt hanger has a circular lateral suspension loop perpendicular to the frame. The frame comprises a double loop with a central bar. The loops have angled outer edges which creates a point half way along sides of the frame and at the top and bottom shoulders of the frame so that the top and bottom edges are both straight (apart from the suspension loop). The buckle is mid green and there is evidence of a dark brown patina on the surface suggesting it may have been black coated. The back of the sword belt hanger is undecorated and the frame edges are angles in towards the centre of the frame. Cf Whitehead, R, 2003, Buckles 1250-1800, Greenlight Publishing,Witham, p72, no 450.
