An incomplete cast copper alloy furniture fitting / mount, in the form of a stag's head, of Post Medieval Dating (17th - 18th Centuries AD).
Around 50% of the mount is present, consisting of the forehead and part of the antlers. The mount is sub triangular in plan and irregular in cross section. It consists of a moulded stag's head. The antlers at the top are incomplete. The eyes, and ears are moulded in relief, with texturing done by fine diagonal lines to imitate the coat of the animal. The reverse is concave.
The mount is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina.
It measures 24.2 mm in length, 35.0 mm wide (across the antlers), and 6.9 mm thick. The metal is 2.4 mm thick. It weighs 9.2 grams.
A similar find(#588, p92) was published from the assemblage at Roman Aldborough (Bishop, 1996) from an uncertain provenance and was considered to be possibly Roman. However it is now believed that they are more likely to be Post Medieval Furniture fittings, of 17th to 18th Centuries dating. Several similar examples which can be found on the database are LVPL-90DF14, SWYOR-33C043 and LIN-0B6761.
