An incomplete copper alloy probable dagger or knife pommel. A sub- spherical pommel, slightly flattened top and bottom. On one face is a small sub-angular aperture and on the opposite face is a broken larger square aperture. There are traces of iron corrosion on the inside of the pommel.
A similar object is recorded in database record LVPL-BF8C69 in which Vanessa Oakden notes:
Other similar objects have been recorded as pommels from swords and daggers on The Portable Antiquities Scheme database. See finds:IOW-2FE5A7,NCL-1C8472,SF-C87850,SUSS-A84682; SUSS-46AC74andWMID-F5E1C3.
Some of these examples extend the date of use for these particular pommels from 1100-1500AD.
See. "London Museum Medieval Catalogue", Ward Perkins (1940: pp. 21-38) where similar spherical pommels (Type VI), are identified as in use in the 12th century and surviving into the 14th century. Ward Perkins also mentions the usage of spherical pommels on rondel-daggers throughout the 15th century and due to the size of this example, it is likely that it would have fit into a dagger rather than a sword (Ibid, p 43).
