Copper alloy medallion. Commemorative die stamped medallion celebrating the golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897, in the form of a quatrefoil with central round panel. The central panel shows Victoria crowned, veiled and draped left, with legend: VICTORIA REGINA. The lobes of the quatrefoil exhibit a slightly eccentric selection of subjects along with a legend, all icons of progress and modernity. The uppermost illustrates a bicycle with the legend BORN 1819, with stub of a loop [lost] above. The right hand lobe shows a modern ironclad battleship at sea, with legend MARRIED 1840. The lower illustrates telegraph wires between two poles, legend: 1837 LONGEST REIGN 1897. The final lobe shows a steam engine and tender and legend: CROWNED 1838. The back of each lobe also bears text: top: IN COMMEMORATION; left: OF THE MOST; bottom: [indistinct, with many Os; right: [--]RESO[--]
