A fragment of drawn silver bodkin-type dress-pin of post-medieval date, c.1600-1700.
Description: The bodkin is formed of a drawn piece of silver and would have had with a slot and perforation (eye) at one end, which one break is across. The other tapering end is also missing. The shaft has a flattened quadrangular cross-section with bevelled edges, and is undecorated. The pin is very worn and the broken end opposite to the slot is bent. Just below the slot are scratched initials likely of the bodkin's owner 'K R'. On the opposite side are the makers mark of two initial in a box, stamped onto the bodkin, these are too worn to read however.
Measurements: 37.08mm long, 3.82mm wide, 2.12mm thick and 2.13g in weight.
Discussion: This type of bodkin dates to the seventeenth-century and was popular across North-West Europe. Many similar examples have been reported as treasure such as, TAR 2004, no. 245 TAR 2004, no. 246, TAR 2004, no. 247, NMGW-4A61A6 (2013TW21) and most recently KENT-E2599A (2016T749)
