An incomplete cast lead pencil of uncertain dating, but probably Medieval to Post Medieval (AD 1200 to AD 1600).

It is circular sectioned, with a break due to an air bubble created during the casting process. The other end is rounded to a blunt point. It measures 47.8 mm in length, with a diameter of 8.0 mm. It weighs 23.5 g. It is a mid grey colour, with an even surface patina.

Several similar styli have been recorded on the PAS database including NLM-908653, LEIC-1414C8, YORYM-C50AD3, NLM-3AACA8, YORYM-100437. They would have been used for writing on wax tablets or for marking building materials. They are probably of Medieval to Post Medieval dating (AD 1200 to AD 1500), but they could possibly be of Roman or Modern dating.
