STRAP END

Unique ID: LANCUM-6AB85E

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete copper alloy strap end dating from the early medieval period, probably c. AD900-1100. The strap end is probably of Thomas' Class E, tongue-shaped. The object is tongue shaped with openwork decoration (there are four perforations around the lower end of the chape) cast in heavy relief and terminates in worn breaks at the attachment end. The upper surface is decorated in heavy relief with what may be a partial anthropomorphic figure, shown only from the waist down with intertwining lower limbs. No rivets survive.

Thomas (2007, p.1) states that the Class E strap ends for the second largest class of Anglo-Saxon strap ends and were particularly popular on the Carolingian continent and in Scandinavia where one of its regular uses was to embellish baldrics. Discoveries in Winchester and York show the continued use of this type of strap end well into the 10th and 11th centuries.

Class: Class E, tongue-shaped
