An incomplete post-Medieval lead alloy powder flask nozzle, or funnel (1600-1700).

The powder flask nozzle can be described in two parts, the upper part or container and the lower part or nozzle. The container is sub-circular in plan. The container has a depth of c. 15.0mm and is 1.5mm thick. Seams are not visible. One attachment loop is complete and there are stubs of the other. The nozzle is conical in shape and sub-circular in cross-section. There is no hole in the nozzle to allow the powder to pass through, so this example may be miscast. The nozzle measures 10.9 mm in length, 9.8 mm in width and 9.4mm in thickness.

Length: 27.2mm; width: 26.3mm; thickness: 22.9mm. Weight: 19.59g.

The powder flask nozzle is light grey with traces of a buff patina.

Several other powder flask nozzles have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For example, see finds: KENT-8A5360; IOW-099437; IOW-6960B4; LVPL-4F53E6; LVPL-E9C398; PUBLIC-1081DB; PUBLIC-429706; SUSS-693247; SUSS-D294D3; WAW-6894D7and WAW-68B126.

According to Courtney (1988), powder flask nozzles and caps are among the most common remains encountered on Civil War sites. A musketter was armed with twelve powder flasks, each attached to his bandolier by a cord. Each powder flask would contain enough gunpowder for a single charge.
