Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast conical weight of plano-convex section with a tapered moulded central aperure of diameter 6.5-9mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A1; patinated. The form is taller or more elongated than the majority of whorls of this form, and the central hole is slightly angled, which might detract from its usefulness as a whorl. The spindle size would, however, permit a Middle Saxon date while the mass might suggest a primary use spinning a yarn. A whorl of similar date which was probably reused as a fishing line weight was reported from the vicinity, and the collection of such objects for riparian reuse may explain their presence here. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 750-850.
