An incomplete copper alloy Scabbard Chape of late Medieval to Post-Medieval date (AD 1400-1600). The object is the concavo-convex front from the chape for a large dagger or small sword scabbard chape. The lower part of the object is formed by a semi-circular radially ribbed pattern, resembling a cockle shell form. Within the upper portion of this portion an openwork trefoil in retained. A moulded horizontal rib separates this from an expanded mouth to the chape which terminated in an irregular and abraded break. This portion of the object retains a central, circular, perforation
The metal is a dark brown in colour with a predominantly smooth patina and some areas of corrosion.
