Ceramic building material. Two fragments of oxidised fabric made by mechanical extrusion of a dense clay paste, from a curved roof tile. Extrusion machinery was introduced to brickworks from c.1840, and superseded ancient techniques of moulding brick and tile by hand. The manufacturing technique was kindly identified by Helen Fry and Sandra Firth of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1850-1950.
