Oyster shell. Two base and two top halves of mature oyster shells, presumably deposited as food waste. Though British oysters were famed in Roman times and were even exported to Rome, they remained a common and useful foodstuff thereafter, the supply probably only being curtailed by coastal pollution. They are most frequently reported from Roman and medieval contexts. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500.
