An incomplete and worn Medieval copper-alloy heraldic harness pendant (c. 1200-1400).
Description: The pendant is in the form of a square topped shield with a suspension loop at 90° to the plane of the pendant. The loop is incomplete, probably due to wear. At the front the design which includes a field of red enamel and additional detail likely making up the heraldic 'blazon' in dark blue enamel, the full design is unfortuanetly unclear obscured wear and corrosion products. Features at the top part of the design may be heraldic 'labels'. The pendant is greenish brown.
Measurements: 43.26mm long, 24.75mm wide, 6.21mm thick (including suspension loop, 2.95mm without) and 10.11g in weight.
Discussion: Shield shaped harness pendants were incredibly popular and many examples exist on the PAS database. Similar heraldic harness pendants have also been noted by Ashley (2002: nos. 51, 55, 67 etc. pgs 10, 11 and 38) and Read (2001, 53-54).
