A probable complete copper alloy ring or open thimble, of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (c. AD 1450 to c. AD 1550).

This thimble is circular in cross-section and the side tapers inwards from the base towards the top. The outer face has 22 vertical lines of drilled sub-triangular pits. There are no manufacturing marks. Neither the top or bottom edges are original.

The thimble has a minimum external diameter of 16.2 mm and a minimum internal diameter of 13.4 mm. It is 8.1 mm tall, with the sides 1.0 mm thick. It weighs 1.7 g.

The thimble is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Several similar open thimbles have been recorded on the PAS database, including: WMID-085505; IOW-8CCAA1; IOW-25E060 and WAW-9A07C0.
