An incomplete artefact of uncertain function, probably of Post Medieval dating (AD 1500 to AD 1800).
Both ends exhibit old predepositional breaks. It consists of a long thin terminal at one end, expanding to a wide central swelling, narrowing into a square terminal. Almost an elognated teardrop shape. It is flat in profile. No decoration is present on either side.
It measures 45.6 mm in length, 8.6 mm wide (at the mid point of the swelling), 1.3 mm wide (at the narrow end), 4.0 mm wide (square terminal) and it is 2.0 mm thick. It weighs 1.7 g.
The artefact is a mid brown colour, with an uneven surface patina.
No direct parallel has been found at the time of recording. It is similar in shape to some nail cleaners of Roman dating, i.e. CORN-88C1B3 and BERK-13027B but it does not have the bifurcated tip that those do. It also bears a resemblance to part of a firearm ramrod holder, such as DUR-F36CE7 and BERK-CDECD0 but the thinness of this artefact seems incompatible with that identification. It is most likely Post medieval in dating (AD 1500 to AD 1800).
