Roman Polden Hill variant type brooch, c.f. Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 1d, Plate 44, AD c. 50-65: The copper alloy brooch is incomplete and is unusually a variant type. The wings are semi-cylindrical terminating with incomplete perforated wing cap. There is only a trace of the other wing. The wings are created by sheet copper alloy which has one terminal with a trace of a folded over to form the wing caps. The outer face of the wings is undecorated. The axis bar, spring and pin are missing. The bow is riveted to the wings with an integral rivet to the bow. The bowhead is rectangular in section and is slightly hump-like in profile. The bow head and bow are undecorated. The bow tapers to a blunt, broken point and is slightly bent. There is no trace of a catchplate.
The surface of the brooch is abraded and has traces of a light brown patina.
The brooch measures 35.78mm long, 18.7mm wide across the wings and weighs 2.78g.
Mackreth (2011;70) comments these type of brooches are found in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Herefordshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Wales, often found on military sites. WAW-D739E4 is a similar brooch.
