An incomplete worn cast copper-alloy Post Medieval (c. 1600-1800) crotal bell.
Description:
The bell remains as one vertical of a two hemispherical domes divided horizontally by a circumferential ridge. The remaining section of the upper hemisphere has one circular sound hole remaining. The square integral suspension loop projects from the apex of the upper dome with bevelled sides, but remains only as on vertical side. The lug has clear striations indicating this finishing. The suspension loop was integral cast. The bell appears to have been broken from the middle of the sound holes at either end of the sound slit dividing the lower hemisphere.
The bell is a dark green colour with a lot of brown staining some from iron corrosion.
Measurements: 40.91mm high (including suspension loop), 28.22mm in diameter and 14.97g in weight
Discussion:
R Blunt's (undated) work suggests, based on the one piece design, cast integral suspension loop and no decoration, a date from the 17-18th centuries AD.
