Mid blue wound small disc bead, circular in plan and slightly biconical in profile. The bead is regularly formed with very even and parallel turned lines on the exterior indicating a mass produced item. There is also no 'tail' at the end of the turned glass on the edge of the perforation on one side and there is no sign of any spiraling into the hole. The perforation is a perfect circle in plan and cylinder in profile. There are indications of wear in a circular pattern on both sides around the central aperture, suggesting this was part of a necklace, but other than that there is no wear. The bead is produced by spinning the molten glass around a mandril or iron rod to form a glass tube which is then cut into individual segments or discs, when still hot, with a cold metal blade (Alan Burchell pers comm). The form, manufacture and colouration suggest that the bead is post-medieval to modern in date.
