An incomplete copper alloy looped toggle, probably late Iron Age/early Roman c BC350 - AD100.
It is round sectioned with flat ends; the solid cylindrical body is narrower at the base than nearer the loop. The ends are decorated with circular terminal indentations. Each terminal is about 7.38mm in diameter with a thickened, rounded rim and central raised dot; it is possible, if compared to others, that there may have been inlay/decoration in this space. There are two deep circumferential grooves running both sides of the barrel. The circular loop extends outwards and is incomplete due to breakage
Looped toggles appear to have been an antecedent of button and loop fasteners and were probably used both to fasten clothing and on harnesses. Examples on the PAS database are SF-C982A5, HAMP-E837B2 and HAMP-9EA592
