An incomplete copper alloy Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Part 3, Group 4, flat wing ends type), of Mackreth 2011, 4.e. Plate 47 of Roman date (AD80-120).

The bow head is humped in profile and on both sides a moulding is present between the bow and wings. The bow tapers to a damaged terminal. The foot is missing along with the pin rest at the rear of the bow. The catch plate was probably an open work example as seen in Bayley and Butcher (2004: 90) 206, 208. The brooch is decorated with a narrow rib with rouletted decoration. That decoration is repeated on the wing end caps. The foot of the brooch, spring, coil, pin, catch plate and axis bar are missing. The wing is broadly semi- cylindrical in profile with some damage to the edges of the perforated wing caps.

The brooch is a dark brown colour, with an even surface patina.

Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches is concentrated in the West Midlands. Similar brooches are illustrated by Bayley and Butcher (2004:p.88-89).

The brooch measures 51.5 mm in length, 24.9 mm width (across wings), 13.8 mm thick. It weighs 11.9 grams.
