An incomplete inverted conical cast lead steelyard weight of probable Roman date,AD 43 - 410.
Description: The weight is an inverted uneven rounded cone and widens towards the top. The surface of the weight is scratched, pitted and chipped. There is a large post-depositional scratch down one side. There is an incomplete highly corroded iron suspension loop projecting from the flat top of the weight and also the domed bottom.Patination of the lead suggests that this is old damage. The the base of the weight is slightly convex. The objects is patinated a mottled white and very light blue-grey.
Measurements: 51.22mm in height, 49.7mm in diameter and 600g in weight.
Discussion: Classic roman steelyards are biconnical with iron or copper-alloy suspension loops, often with a loop on the top and bottom. Although not the classic shape the presence of suspension loops at the top and bottom suggest a Roman date.
