Roman copper alloy head stud bow brooch, Length: 44 mm, width: 17 mm, thickness: 14.0 mm, weight: 7.41 grams. The brooch is largely intact and has short rectangular cross sectioned wings which have a stepped front. The reverse of the wings has a pin bar enclosed in a rounded projection in its centre. This has a central recess to accomodate the hinged pin, sitting below the remains of a suspension loop on its upper edge.
The bow is sub rectangular in cross section and is curved. It is decorated on the upper surface with a raised round 'headstud' at the top which is divided into four quadrants. The main part of the bow is decorated with a raised linear rectangular cell which has a central raised area formed of a row of small overlapping squares. At the base of this is a double rounded collar above a stepped semi-circular foot. The majority of the reverse of the bow is taken up with a catchplate scar.
It matches fig.191 eg.421 in Hattat, R.'A visual catalogue'
