A fragment from the base of a Roman vessel of uncertain fabric. The fragment appears to be part of a pedestal base of a larger container. The base section flares outwards slightly and its upper surface is encircled by two concentric grooves. Above this the central section curves inwards slightly. The lower end of a hollow interior can be seen within the break to one side of the central section. The fabric is hard and fairly coarse. It is tempered with plentiful poorly sorted angular quartz sand (<1.5mm) and occasional darker fragments, probably iron ore (<1mm). It is a light orange-buff colour with a slightly lighter inner core.
