A complete Iron Age to early Roman copper-alloy button and looped fastener with double-boss head and circular loop loop (c. 50 BC - AD 50).

The object has been cast as a single piece. The double head has a maximum thickness of 5.45mm and has a damaged raised circular circumferential band. the heads are D shaped in cross section and decorated with raised decoration consisting of a raised lyre loop, both ends terminate with raised pellets, one is circular, the second is a raised trumpet coil and pellet. The reverse of the head is flat and undecorated. From the reverse of the heard projects pirifom (pear-shaped) loop with a pointed oval perforation (8.3mm in internal length and 7.15mm in internal width). At the base of the projection the loop is 6.7mm in width.

A single groove seperates the two heads and runs along the projecting loop terminating at the perforation.

The loop is 21.7mm in length, 14.15mm wide and weighs 15.15 grams.

This button-and-loop fastener can be classified as Wild's (1970, 139) Class I. The type is probably British, manufactured during the pre-Roman period and the early years of the Roman occupation. Similar examples with undecorated heads have been published on the PASd atabase as records: SF-E503E7, IOW-91F702 and BH-B21F44.

Wild notes (ibid., 146) that this type was derived from native Iron Age designs, but are thought to date from the Conquest and post-Conquest period (Worrell 2008, 344). They have a generally southern distribution, with numerous published examples from Somerset (Wild 1970, 148; Jackson 1990, 39; refs. 83-86).

Recent work using PAS data has extended distributions further east, with single boss variants occurring further north (Worrell 2008, 344).
