The brooch is a Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type, abnormal moulded stud in form of a boss), Mackreth 2011, 4.l.b. Plate 49. It has been made from cast copper alloy. Polden Hill type brooches date to the first century. Hattatt illustrates a similar brooch in Brooches of Antiquity, No. 904.
The wings are semi-cylindrical terminating with incomplete wing caps. The axis bar, pin and spring are now missing. The wings are moulded in relation to their diameter. The terminals of the wings are the widest points, they then taper to the mid point before expanding towards the bow head. One wing has a hole through it. There is not an equivalent hole on the other side.
The bow head is hump-like and has a prominent vertical ridge which tapers until the apex of the bow. Either side of this ridge, there are two fine grooves which stop at the apex of the bow. The bow is sub semi-circular in section. At the apex of the bow there is a high-relief oval moulding as decoration. On the reverse of the bow at the apex the catch plate starts, but the lower portion of the bow is missing and the catch plate is therefore also missing. The break is not recent.
The surface of the brooch has a well developed mid grey patina. It weighs 14.47g, and measures 27.2mm wide and 31.3mm long.
