Two ceramic vessel sherds, probably of Post-Medieval North Devon Gravel tempered ware, dating to c. 1550-1850. One body sherd & one rim sherd, representing two seperate vessels.
The rim sherd is from a thick walled vessel with an everted, slightly collared rim, made of a very hard fired fabric with a slightly laminar structure visible at cleaner breaks. It is an orange micaeous fabric with a reduced core, containing abundant coarse grained sand temper. With very abundant sub-angular quartz, <2mm, sub-rounded white stone, <3.25mm, and occasional ferrous inclusions and probable crushed flint, <2.25mm. It weighs 19.04g.
The body sherd is potentially earlier than the above. It appears to be softer fired (although this may be due to it being more abraded) and has a slightly finer grained temper with more frequent ferrous inclusions, although its general character resembles that described above. Although undecorated, its internal surface is discoloured buff-yellow with a slightly pitted "orange peel-like" surface, suggesting that it was originally glazed. It weighs 10.42g.
Striations on the surface of both sherds would suggest they were wheel thrown.
