BROOCH

The brooch is a Colchester Two-Piece brooch, a Polden Hill type. It has been made from cast copper alloy. Polden Hill type brooches date to the first century. Hattatt illustrates a similar brooch in Iron Age and Roman Brooches, No. 379.

The wings are semi-cylindrical terminating with wing caps. The wing caps support a copper alloy axis bar, around which the spring is coiled. Due to hardened soil, it is not possible to see the coils. The pin is missing.

The bow head is hump-like but due to its poor condition it is not possible to see any decoration. The bow is semi-circular in section. At the apex of the bow there is a moulded sub-circular platform as decoration. The lower portion of the bow tapers to a blunt, possibly broken point. The catch plate is not visible suggesting the bow is broken.

The surface of the brooch has a patchy mid green patina. It weighs 9.6g, and measures 19.8mm wide and 37.8mm long.
