Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4, flat wing ends type), c.f. Mackreth Type 4.i1. Plate 47, AD c. 80-240. The copper alloy brooch has semi-cylindrical undecorated wings with the axis bar, spring and pin all missing. At the centre of the upper edge of the wings there is a trace of an integral hook. The bowhead is hump-like in profile and is decorated with a vertical groove. The bow is D-shaped in section and tapers to a blunt terminal. The bow is decorated with two columns of high-relief lentoids which form disconnected crosses with the fine vertical groove continuing from the head between them. The reverse of the bow has an incomplete catchplate.
The surface of the brooch has a mottled dark brown-green patina.
It measures 60.27mm in length, 22.49mm in width, and weighs 16.51g.
The brooch is a Polden Hill type, Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands and suggest they date to AD 80 to 120. Mackreth Type 4i1.
