JETTON

Unique ID: SOM-31BBDB

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy Post-Medieval Jetton, probably issued by Hans Shultes III in Nuremberg, dating to 1608-1612. A "Rose/Orb" jetton, depicting three crowns alternating with three lis on the obverse and the imperial orb within a tressure of three arches on the reverse. In addition, there appear to have been three pairs of pellets outside of the tressure on the reverse, although only one pair has surivived. Mitchiner (1988: 411-413) publishes a number of very similar, but no identical, jettons issued by Hans Shultes III, and with YORYM-4D3332 on this database being identified as issued by Hans Shultes III, featuring both pairs of pellets outside the tressure and a reverse inscription ending in ER, the same attribution seems likely here.

The Jetton has been broken roughly in half between 11 and 5 o'clock on the reverse.
