The brooch is a Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type), cf.Mackreth 2011, 4.d Pl. 47. It has been made from cast copper alloy. Polden Hill type brooches date to the first century. Hattatt illustrates a similar brooch in Brooches of Antiquity, No. 900.
, cf.
The wings are semi-cylindrical terminating with wing caps. The wing caps support a copper alloy axis bar, around which the spring is coiled. The spring has 8 coils, and forms a horizontal bar which is held in place by a small hook which is integral to the reverse of the wing. The pin is missing.
The bow head is hump-like and is decorated with three vertical ridges which taper towards each other along the bow. On both sides a moulding is present at the junction between the bow and the wings. The bow is oval in section, however, only a small portion of the bow remains.
The surface of the brooch has traces of tinning or silvering. Otherwise the brooch has a well developed mid grey/green coloured patina. It weighs 6.46g, and measures 16.5mm wide and 18.1mm long.
