A worn silver Roman Republican Denarius with central circular piercing, probably dating to the period c.140-130 BC (Reece period 1) and perhaps issued by the moneyer L. Trebanius (c.135 BC).
Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma right, behind X.
Reverse: Uncertain figure riding a quadriga right, illegible legend below, (ROMA) in exergue.
Diameter: 17mm; Weight: 3.25g.
Probably mint of Rome. Cf. RRC 241/1a-b for the L. Trebanius issues.

The coin has been deliberately pierced at its centre, effectively removing the coin from circulation and modifying it for use as an object rather than a coin. As such, on the balance of probability it constitutes potential Treasure under the Treasure Act (1996) by being a silver object consisting of more than 10% precious metal content and of an antiquity greater than 300 years.

It was also found in the same field as Treasure case 2016T417, see LEIC-F4014B.

This field contains a Roman villa, indentified in 1991 by metalwork and pottery/building materials scatter and subsequently investigated in 2017, when stone buildings were confirmed. see
