An incomplete copper alloy Colchester-derivative probable Dolphin type brooch of Roman date (AD 43-65).
One of the wings, foot of the brooch, catch plate, spring and pin are missing. The brooch is 'T' shaped in plan with a semi-cylindrical although flattened wing. The bow head is hump-like, and slightly angular (comma shaped) in profile. The bow tapers to a rounded damaged terminal with a well-developed patina. The axis bar and spring are missing at the head of the brooch. There is a circular impression at the rear of the brooch where the axis bar would have been placed. There does not appear to be any decoration on this brooch, however much of the original surface has been lost and there is a well-developed green coloured patina across all surfaces. Similar brooches are illustrated by Hattatt (2012) on page 298.
The brooch measures 17.7mm in length, 11.7mm width (across the incomplete wings), 6.9mm thick at the point where the bow begins to taper, and weighs 1.72 grams.
