An incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4, flat wing cap type), c.f. Mackreth 2011, 4.a-4.b, 4c, Plate 46, of Roman dating AD 80 to AD120.
Around 50% of the brooch is present, consisting of the bow and wings. The spring, pin, foot and catch plate are missing, presumed lost in antiquity.
The bow is angular and hump back, resembling a comma. It is broken around 2/3 of its length. The top of the bow has been decorated with a wide central raised ridge, with small ridges at the shoulders. The remains of a rearward facing hook are present on the head. The wings are semi-cyclindrial. The remains of flat wing caps are present at the end of each wing. A cylindrical recess is present behind the wings, this would have originally retained the spring. The reverse is undecorated.
It measures 25.3 mm in length, 23.2 mm wide and 10.3 mm thick. It weighs 6.7 g.
The brooch is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
